Russian Vocabulary: Talking about Studying


How do you tell someone in Russian that you are learning Russian? Or how do you explain that you want to take a Russian course? In this article you will find answers to these questions and learn basic vocabulary on the topic of studying.

Russian Vocabulary about Learning Russian

Let’s look at the phrases and sentences related to learning the Russian language:

  • Я хочу выучить русский язык. (Ya khochu vyuchit’ russkii yazyk.) – I want to study Russian.

  • Я хочу записаться на курсы русского языка. (Ya khochu zapisat’sya na kursy russkogo yazyka.) – I want to take a Russian course.

  • Я учу русский язык. (Ya uchu russkii yazyk.) – I am learning the Russian language.

Talking about Subjects Other than Russian

Here are a few examples of Russian vocabulary related to school subjects. Pay special attention to the sentences, as they contain not only the names of subjects but also other words related to school education.

  • Я изучаю психологию. (Ya izuchaiu psikhologiu.) – I study psychology.

  • Он учит английский язык. (On uchit angliiskii yazyk.) – He is learning English.

  • Она преподаёт математику. (Ona prepodayot matematiku.) – She teaches math.

  • Он учитель биологии. (On uchitel’ biologii.) – He is a biology teacher.

  • Маша получила плохую оценку по физике. (Masha poluchila plokhuiu otsenku po fizike.) – Masha received bad marks in physics.

  • На уроках литературы дети читают книги. (Na urokakh literatury deti chitaiut knigi.) – Children read a book during literature lessons.

  • Я не люблю химию. (Ya ne liubliu khimiiu.) – I don’t like chemistry.

  • После урока физкультурыу нас будет урок географии. (Posle urika fizkul’tury u nas budet urok geografii.) – We will have a geography lesson after a physical education lesson.


In Russian schools, teachers are called “учителя” (uchitelya – teachers) or “учитель” (uchitel’ – teacher). If you’re talking about college or university teachers and professors, the right words are “преподаватель” (prepodavatel’ – college/university teacher) or “профессор” (professor – professor).


Talking about Places where You Can Study

You can take a course, go to school, or study at a college or university.

  • Я учил немецкий язык на языковых курсах. (Ya uchil nemetskii yazyk na yazykovykh kursakh.) – I learned German in a language course.

  • Ученик идёт в школу. (Uchenik udyot v shkolu.) – A student goes to school.

  • Студенты учатся в колледжах/университетах. (Studenty uchatsya v kolledgakh/universitetakh.) – Students study at colleges/universities.


Talking about the Kinds of Education You Can Receive in Russia

High school is known as secondary education, or “среднее образование” (srednee obrazovanie). To achieve a complete secondary education – “полное среднее образование” (polnoe srednee obrazovanie) – takes eleven years. If you leave school after nine years, you will have an incomplete secondary education, or “неполное среднее образование” (nepolnoe srednee obrazovanie).

  • Когда он закончит школу, он получит аттестат о полном среднем образовании. (Kogda on zakonchit shkolu on poluchit attestat o polnom srednem obrazovanii.) – When he finishes school, he receives a Certificate of Secondary Education.

At colleges, students receive vocational education, or “средне-специальное образование” (sredne-spezial’noe obrazovanie).


At Russian universities, students complete degrees (“степени” – stepeni) – or a higher or post-secondary education (“высшее образование” – vysshee obrazovanie).

  • Она получила диплом бакалавра. (Ona poluchila diplom bakalavra.) – She received a bachelor’s diploma.

  • Я получаю степень магистра. (Ya poluchaiu stepen’ magistra.) – I’m receiving a master’s degree.


Talking about Exam Time

During your studies, you pass exams and write tests. This is the language we use when talking about tests and exams:

  • Восьмиклассники пишут контрольную работу по геометрии. (Vos’miklassniki pishut kontrolnuiu rabotu po geometrii.) – Eighth grade students are writing a geometry test.

  • Его выгнали из класса, потому что он списывал на контрольной. (Ego vygnali is klassa, potomu shto on spisyval na kontrol’noi.) – He was kicked out of the classroom because he was cheating during the test.

  • Завтра я сдаю экзамен по биологии. (Zavtra ya sdaiu ekzamen po biologii.) – Tomorrow I have a biology exam.

  • Мне нужно подготовиться к экзамену по литературе. (Mne nuzhno podgotovit’sya k ekzamenu po literature.) – I need to prepare for my literature exam.

  • Он провалил/не сдал экзамен по математике. (On provalil/ne sdal ekzamen po matematike.) – He failed/didn’t pass a math exam.

  • Я сдала экзамен по химии. (Ya sdala ekzamen po khimii.) – I’ve passed the chemistry exam.
